What math class will I take at Jesuit? Your scores on the Algebra and Geometry Challenge Exams will determine your placement. The most common placements for students who have successfully completed AGS 2 are Geometry/Trig Honors and Algebra 2/Trig Honors. What math class will I take at Jesuit? Your score on the Algebra Challenge Exam will determine your placement in Algebra 1, Algebra 1/Trig, Algebra 1/Trig Honors, or Geometry/Trig Honors. A student who is struggling with one level may be encouraged to move to another course which more appropriately meets the student’s academic needs. Students may take summer session courses (with teacher permission) to progress to a higher level in the fall. Teachers assess each student’s progress continuously and will accelerate any student who may be ready to move to a higher level of math. Students usually follow a recommended sequence (see Course Catalog), but are not locked into it. Placement will be determined every year by the current math teacher and the department. Most freshmen are enrolled in Algebra 1, Algebra 1/Trig, or Geometry/Trig Honors, but many are in Algebra 2/Trig Honors or in Precalculus Honors a few take AP Calculus AB or BC.

Students coming to Jesuit with HS credit for Algebra 2 or above will be individually placed by the department.

The second exam allows incoming freshmen who have mastered geometry to seek possible placement in Algebra 2/Trig Honors or in Precalculus Honors.

The first exam allows an incoming freshman to demonstrate mastery of Algebra 1 leading to possible placement in Geometry/Trig Honors.

Jesuit offers two Challenge Exams in the spring for enrolled incoming freshmen.

Initial placement, based on a student's HSPT/Placement Exam math score, is in Algebra 1, Algebra 1/Trig, or Algebra 1/Trig Honors.

Over 850 students chose to enroll in Honors, AP, or dual-college credit math courses this year, including 250 AP Calculus students and over 70 post-calculus students. These courses add up to a total of 48 college credits (12 calculus credits, 28 post-calculus credits, and 8 statistics credits).

In addition to Advanced Placement Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, and Statistics (dual-credit with Portland State University), JHS offers five full years of post-calculus mathematics courses, all dual-credit: Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Number Theory, Discrete Mathematics, and Analysis & Topology. The department prides itself on offering every student an appropriate placement in the 9 th grade, opportunities for advancement each year, and a level of challenge to meet the individual’s time and interest. Mathematics offers students an appreciation and understanding of the world of numbers and space, and skill in working with them.
